The Virtual Skylight (VS) is not a luminaire in the conventional sense and is best compared to Tubular Daylighting Devices(TDD) such as the Solatube and the Sun Tunnel. I have rounded up a comparison sheet so that one can better understand the differences, using the Solatube 290DS and the Flotonix VSP Virtual Porthole
Diameter 14″ 15″
Price $479 $225
Installation $400 0-$100 (hangs on wall)
Hole in roof/wall yes no
Sun controlled CCT yes yes
dimmable mechanical option on wall switch standard smart phone app

cost per year 0 $5
virtual sky image no yes
animation apps no yes, cloud motion simulation tied to wind speed.
Light output lumen 9000 2500

The light output spec favors the 290DS with direct overhead solar rays but given a winter cloud cover the advantage disappears as the VSP tracks sun light above the cloud layer and always has a 2500 lumen maximum.
